EU Methane Strategy: what it means for gas?
The recent publication of the methane strategy sends a strong signal that the EU is looking at tackling GHG emissions across the scope in the context of the Green Deal. Join us in our webinar on 10 November 2020 to see how the EU seeks to mitigate these emissions across sectors, with particular focus on waste, agriculture and the energy sector.
Representatives from the European Commission, civil society and industry will discuss existing measures and the challenges ahead in implementing the strategy and in reducing methane emissions in the years to come.

The panellists
Malcolm L. McDowell has been working at the European Commission in DG Energy for 10 years. He is Team Leader responsible for the methane strategy. He was previously responsible for renewable gases in the renewables unit and before that, he was responsible for the oil refining sector and worked as oil and gas analyst.
He also worked previously in industry, including as Head of EU Affairs at oil & renewable diesel company Neste and for a number of years in the banking industry, including as equity research analyst in French bank Société Générale and then as Economic Adviser at the European Savings Banks Group and as Head of Economic Affairs at the European Mortgage Federation.
He has a Master of Science in Natural Resource and Environmental Economics from University College, London and a Master of Arts in Philosophy and Economics from the University of Edinburgh.
Thilo Wieland, an industrial engineering and business management graduate, has been a member of the Wintershall Board of Executive Directors since December 2015 and is responsible for Exploration & Production in Russia, North Africa & South America. From August 2017, he supervises issues related to Wintershall’s activities in gas transport projects, including trans-Baltic lines Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 and their onshore units OPAL and NEL. After studying industrial engineering at the Technical University of Berlin, he began his career in 1999 at Wintershall Erdgas Handelshaus in Berlin.
Since then he has held various positions within the Wintershall Group, among others as Head of Department Natural Gas Supply West at WINGAS.
Until 2013, he represented Wintershall’s shareholder interests in the Nord Stream and South Stream projects before becoming Vice President, Strategy and Portfolio Management, within the Wintershall Group.
As General Manager of Wintershall Libya, Wieland has been responsible for the activities of Germany’s largest internationally active oil and gas producer in the North African country since 2014.
Eva Hennig, study of Mechanical Engineering at Technical University in Munich. With Thüga Aktiengesellschaft in Munich since 1989 in various positions, since 1.1.2018 head of department for EU Energy Policy. The Thüga Group constitutes the largest alliance of nearly 100 municipal utilities in Germany with activities in the sectors gas, electricity, district heating, water and various services.
Eva Hennig is active in all topics related to gas with a special interest in sector coupling and the production and distribution of renewable and decarbonized gases. Since 2012 chair of the Eurogas Distribution Committee.
Poppy Kalesi leads EDF’s Energy program in Europe with a focus on delivering ambitious EU policies that will contribute to deep reductions in global oil and gas methane emissions by 2025. Poppy’s experience includes energy and climate policy, business strategy and technology innovation from roles previously held with the European Commission, the European Parliament, Eurelectric, Statoil and the Norwegian Ocean Industries.
Based in Norway, Poppy has also served on the Boards of the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform and the Norwegian Institute for International Networks.
The moderator
Dr Adam Hawkes is Director of the Sustainable Gas Institute at Imperial College London, Programme Lead for Energy Modelling at the Grantham Institute, and Reader in Energy Systems in the Centre for Process Systems Engineering at Imperial. A Chartered Engineer, Dr Hawkes has more than 20 years experience of technical leadership and management in the field of energy technology assessment and systems modelling. His work takes an integrated approach to energy system analysis across scales, infrastructures, technologies and jurisdictions. An important part of this work is in understanding the characteristics of methane emissions, and methods of their abatement, focusing on oil and gas supply chains. Adam has also worked on key emerging challenges in energy systems such as future roles for conventional and low carbon fuels, heat decarbonisation, mass-market integration of renewables, and the role of carbon capture in sustainable energy systems.
He frequently provides strategic and analytical services to UK and international governments, industry, multilaterals, NGOs and other energy system stakeholders on topics ranging from technology appraisal through to policy impact assessment.
